Critique Reflection

I feel like I did best on the pacing of the film even though the actual takes were very long. I also thought that the music went with the intensity and pacing of the film. My classmates thought that the slow mo tilt up shot where the phone thief jumped over the girl tying her shoe. They also thought that the acting performance was believable. I feel like the obstacles during the rising action needed to be made more prominent. Our strengths were: acting, pacing, camera angles/movements, and audio. Our weaknesses were: lighting, white balance, and costumes. I need to focus on making more prominent obstacles and improve my strengths by adjusting the audio according to the action and using camera angles to add emotion to the film.

Metropolis Analysis Questions

The Mediator in Metropolis is Freder, but he actually stands for the "heart". In Metropolis there are two basic forms of people. There are the "hands" who are the workers/labor force that keep Metropolis running. They are basically slaves to the machines that are used to run the city. The second form of people in Metropolis are the "heads". These are the people that are the ones in charge. They live in the upper section of the city and spectate the workers to make sure they are still doing there jobs. These people are also often very wealthy and have lots of leisure time to enjoy partying and socializing. The heart is the one who bridges the gap between the hands and the heads. The heart understands that it is important for the workers and the bosses to be on the same level. Without the heart/the mediator balance between the head and hands there will never be peace because one feels superior and one feels inferior. I believe that Fritz Lang is advocating...

Chase Scene

Camera movements are mainly used to change or enhance the emotional direction of the film. For example, a slow dolly out makes the character seem emotionally lost and abandoned. Camera angles can be used to force the audience to focus on a specific action. They are also used to portray principals of design which in turn add to the audience's emotions. A few things I thought were done well was the pacing. The quick shots allowed for a faster pace which made the chase seem more critical and intense. Another thing I thought was done well was the use of principals of design. Certain principals of design that were included greatly contributed to the overarching plot and goal of the chase. Those are some of the things that I thought were done well in this chase scene. On the contrary, I thought that the costumes of the actors changing made the film slightly confusing. Donut scene

The biggest challenge that I faced in this project was making the plate. I wanted a particular look to the plate that was proving to be a challenge. I wanted the curve to go up and then out in a smooth and natural fashion. This was a little difficult to accomplish with the bezier curve because I was working with multiple curves in a slim area. It created difficulty because the curves were almost overlapping and made it hard to see which curve was which. I overcame this challenge through trial and error. I used trial and error by seeing what happened when one curve was adjusted and then I would undo that action. I kept doing this until I achieved the result that I wanted. That is how I overcame the challenge of forming the curves for the plate.

How are movements used?

Crane Down- Dropped into character's world. Crane Up- Shows us how small a character is. Crane high to low- Makes a character look strong and opposing and creates fear. Handheld camera- Creates a feeling of uneasiness or danger. Quick Pan- Change the emotional direction of a scene almost instantly. Quick Push In- Creates a sense of shock or surprise. Slow Dolly In- Creates tension and a sense of intimacy with the character. Slow Dolly Out- Leaves the character emotionally lost and abandoned/empathy. Dolly Across/tracking shot- Reveals action or changes emotional direction in a scene. Glidecam Camera- Makes a feeling of epic or dreamlike. Glidecam 360 reveal- Calm before the storm feeling.
