Metropolis Analysis Questions

The Mediator in Metropolis is Freder, but he actually stands for the "heart". In Metropolis there are two basic forms of people. There are the "hands" who are the workers/labor force that keep Metropolis running. They are basically slaves to the machines that are used to run the city. The second form of people in Metropolis are the "heads". These are the people that are the ones in charge. They live in the upper section of the city and spectate the workers to make sure they are still doing there jobs. These people are also often very wealthy and have lots of leisure time to enjoy partying and socializing. The heart is the one who bridges the gap between the hands and the heads. The heart understands that it is important for the workers and the bosses to be on the same level. Without the heart/the mediator balance between the head and hands there will never be peace because one feels superior and one feels inferior.

I believe that Fritz Lang is advocating Communism. I think this because in the beginning of the movie Metropolis is a capitalist government which is clearly shown as not working out. This is demonstrated as an ineffective form of government in the story of the tower of babel and in Metropolis when the workers rebel. However at the end of the movie Freder joins the hands of a worker and the boss showing us that when the head and hands are equal. This supports communism by showing us that when everyone is equal a government can work effectively.

Film Score Investigation

Why Music? Music is an essential part of film. It can be used to set the tone for a scene or to drive the action. When used correctly in conjunction with visuals, music can transform the emotional experience of a film. Some of the most memorable moments of a film are because of the score. Film scores can be used to build tension, fear, or any emotion. For this investigation I will be learning about how to create a film score. The Psychological Effect of Music In Film 1 during our study of film history we discussed what is known as the Kuleshov effect. The Kuleshov effect is an analysis of how the audiences interpretation of an image changes in relation to the next image. So if you have a man with a neutral face and you cut to a hamburger and back to the man he looks hungry. Similarly, music creates a tone for the visuals presented to the audience. This tone is what allows the audience to understand the emotions they are intended to be feeling while viewing the film. A grea...

Year End Summary

Favorite Part of Class My favorite part of class was being able to work independently. Having the freedom to work at my own pace was a breath of fresh air. Also what I enjoyed a lot was being able to help with other groups shoots. Before we would only shoot in our own groups, but with the freedom to shoot outside of class it became a lot easier. Seeing how other people performed their tasks and managed their crew was also an interesting and insightful experience. What I Learned the Most I've learned the most about how to deal with people on a set. Being outside of school completely changes the dynamic and it really shows you who is a hard worker and who isn't. Being able to pick and choose who I worked with is great, but it is important to know how to work with people you wouldn't want to work with. It is a key role of the director to keep everyone motivated on the shoot. This is essential because if no one is trying than you aren't going to have a good movie. It t...
