Brainstorming

In my last post I mentioned having done a good deal of pre-production work. I have continued to do so, and have started pre-production on another idea. My original production flow has been yet again reorganized. I was originally intending to drop another gangster/crime film, but instead I have started writing a script for a crime thriller. This is going to be more phycological and cerebral in design. I have just finished laying out the plot and have begun writing the first draft with a friend of mine. So right now there are four projects I have definitively laid out ahead of me: Crime Thriller, Sci-fi/Neo-Noir, and final part of the weekend films. With that being said here is some new pre-production work I've been cooking up.

Brainstorming/Start of First Draft for Crime Thriller

Setting:Present

Morally Ambiguous

More Ambiguous the more Universal

More Specific less Universal

Battle between consciousness and unconsciousness

Theme/Global Issue/Question: What would you do without conscious moral limitations? Individual PERCEPTION VS REALITY, QUEST FOR PURPOSE

Character

Name: anonymous

Characteristics: Loner,

Style:

Social: Has connections, Keeps to himself

Occupation: Detective

White male, depressed, quiet, “head injury” leads to black out periods

Main character is depressed and has trouble making decisions for himself. He goes to a bar and meets a man who becomes his best friend. His friend ends up helping him around, but then during one of his blackouts he finds his friend is dead. In the end, the main character discovers that during his blackouts, he goes on violent rages and on one occasion killed his friend.

Dreams during the blackouts. Dream sees a friend shoot another guy and get blood on his pants. Wakes up and sees his friend with blood on his pants. Loses the barrier between dream and reality he kills his friend. Main character is mentally ill and has dreamlike hallucinations. Audience is led to believe that his friend is a killer trying to kill him. At the end it is understood that the main character is delirious and has rationalized with hallucinations killing his friend out of jealousy/fear. Ending gunfight his friend explains (series of flashbacks) that the main character is mentally ill and has delusions. Film ends before it is revealed what is true.

Mentally ill guy investigates his friend in an attempt to uncover the secret of his reality.

Dialogue idea

Do you ever wonder why the things that are bad for you are cool?

Wha-what do you mean?

I mean smoking, vaping, weed, teenage sex, our society creates these trends right?

Yeah, I guess?

So why can't they control something they created? Because they do. They want us to stay in our place. They don't want us to thrive. They want us to be lazy, overeducated, swimming in debt. At the end of the day all they want is more power. And we give it to them. With each check of the ballot box.

Introduction

MC (V.O.): Todd saved my life.(sequence of what's being narrated) I was leaving the bar, on my way home when a guy jumped me in the alley.

Mugger: Gimme everything you got and don’t make a scene.

MC (nods in compliance)

Mugger looks down and sees necklace on MC.
Mugger: That’s a nice necklace you got there, are you a priest or something?

MC: N-No.

Mugger: So are you religious at all? Or is it just a fuckin gimick? Cause if there’s anything I hate more than a priest it’s a fuckin lying priest.

MC: I’m not a priest! I’m just a Christian, man!

Mugger: well you better start praying to your God boy cause your day of reckoning has come, you hear?

MC (vo): My God had arrived: Todd.

Mugger gets punched by Todd while smoking.

Mugger: argh!

Donut scene

The biggest challenge that I faced in this project was making the plate. I wanted a particular look to the plate that was proving to be a challenge. I wanted the curve to go up and then out in a smooth and natural fashion. This was a little difficult to accomplish with the bezier curve because I was working with multiple curves in a slim area. It created difficulty because the curves were almost overlapping and made it hard to see which curve was which. I overcame this challenge through trial and error. I used trial and error by seeing what happened when one curve was adjusted and then I would undo that action. I kept doing this until I achieved the result that I wanted. That is how I overcame the challenge of forming the curves for the plate.

Film Score Investigation

Why Music? Music is an essential part of film. It can be used to set the tone for a scene or to drive the action. When used correctly in conjunction with visuals, music can transform the emotional experience of a film. Some of the most memorable moments of a film are because of the score. Film scores can be used to build tension, fear, or any emotion. For this investigation I will be learning about how to create a film score. The Psychological Effect of Music In Film 1 during our study of film history we discussed what is known as the Kuleshov effect. The Kuleshov effect is an analysis of how the audiences interpretation of an image changes in relation to the next image. So if you have a man with a neutral face and you cut to a hamburger and back to the man he looks hungry. Similarly, music creates a tone for the visuals presented to the audience. This tone is what allows the audience to understand the emotions they are intended to be feeling while viewing the film. A grea...
