Marking Period 2 Reflection

Tristan

After being a small part in Tristan's project I have been greatly inspired. I am consistently surprised and intrigued by Tristan's creative nature as well as ambitious goals. His films continue to get larger in scope and increasingly challenging. Tristan's latest film Finn Rider and the Mystery of Riku is no exception. Even though I was only around for a small part of the film I still was quite impressed by the things I saw. In his latest film there are a number of action sequences. Something that I have not even attempted. Action has always been a task that I deemed to demanding with my current knowledge. However, after being a part of Tristan's production process I have been inspired to attempt some action myself. The main things that I noticed is that acting is more relevant than ever to selling realistic action. Also being able to put in the time when it comes to rehearsing with actors is crucial. Making sure everyone knows the plan and the choreography is an absolute necessity.

Hanna

Hanna was the only person who created an avant garde film this marking period. Her film was a very visually abstract film which contained a lot of good composition. One thing I found very interesting was the great use of variety. There is a completely different location used for each of the zodiac signs, which makes the film seem fresh. You never feel like your watching the same thing over and over again. The use of poetry creates a very personal vibe for the film. It really feels like a persons genuine reflection upon the world around them, because it is. I have to say the authenticity of this film is what makes it stand out the most. The fact that you're made aware your hearing someones perspective on the world creates a sort of intimate relatability. What I was able to gain from this film is how one can transform their perspective into narrative. I hope that Hanna continues to create films that show a genuine personal perspective.

Justin

While I only had a very small role in Justin's film and wasn't there for many days of filming, I learned a lot from hearing about his filming experience. Justin faced a lot of set backs and hardships while trying to create his film. Most of this came down to scheduling shoots where everyone was available. Talking about the major difficulties he had helped me to think about planning future projects. For starters when filming over multiple days with multiple people they need to be available a lot more frequently. I got away with filming with filming with multiple people because I filmed in one day. The problem for Justin is his film was too long to film in one day. This forced him into scheduling difficulties. From his experience I learned when filming with the same people for multiple days it is important to make them aware they will be needed for multiple days. Although scheduling many days in advance is complicated it ensures the integrity of your cast, crew, and project completion.

Carey

Although I have never been interested in creating 2D animation Carey's process was still something I was able to learn from. During the producing process Carey mentions how he created rough sketches for concept art. Even though I produce film I found the idea of sketches very useful. This is most helpful in the pre-production phase, and it allows for your vision to be communicated visually with others working on the project. The other thing Carey mentioned that I found useful was pulling inspiration from other youtubers. It's easy to watch a movie and get inspired but lots of the time it's impossible to replicate. When you pull inspiration from others on the same level as you it becomes a lot more relevant and helpful.

Giovanni

Gio is more interested in the music video side of filming but even still his production process is useful. One thing he talked about doing is creating a playlist of youtube video tutorials. This is something that I have done and found extremely useful. Especially if the tutorial is for something you will use again in the future and might forget. I've done this with videos ranging from writing to VFX, and I find it very helpful to stay organized and efficient. Also, Gio talks about practicing the VFX on older footage. I've done VFX for films where I was learning on the fly. Needless to say they did not work out so well. Even just following along with the tutorial a few times can sometimes make a huge difference in the overall quality of the finished effect.

Donut scene

The biggest challenge that I faced in this project was making the plate. I wanted a particular look to the plate that was proving to be a challenge. I wanted the curve to go up and then out in a smooth and natural fashion. This was a little difficult to accomplish with the bezier curve because I was working with multiple curves in a slim area. It created difficulty because the curves were almost overlapping and made it hard to see which curve was which. I overcame this challenge through trial and error. I used trial and error by seeing what happened when one curve was adjusted and then I would undo that action. I kept doing this until I achieved the result that I wanted. That is how I overcame the challenge of forming the curves for the plate.

Film Score Investigation

Why Music? Music is an essential part of film. It can be used to set the tone for a scene or to drive the action. When used correctly in conjunction with visuals, music can transform the emotional experience of a film. Some of the most memorable moments of a film are because of the score. Film scores can be used to build tension, fear, or any emotion. For this investigation I will be learning about how to create a film score. The Psychological Effect of Music In Film 1 during our study of film history we discussed what is known as the Kuleshov effect. The Kuleshov effect is an analysis of how the audiences interpretation of an image changes in relation to the next image. So if you have a man with a neutral face and you cut to a hamburger and back to the man he looks hungry. Similarly, music creates a tone for the visuals presented to the audience. This tone is what allows the audience to understand the emotions they are intended to be feeling while viewing the film. A grea...
