Themes in Conceptual Film

For as long as I can remember I have always been fascinated by science-fiction. Works of art that open our eyes to new visual sensations. That is why I am interested in utilizing the theme of invention and fantasy. My favorite way to use this theme is to create an adversary to humanity as a whole. A powerful being that challenges us as humans to unite, adapt, and overcome. With the theme of Invention and Fantasy you are able to create all powerful conflicts that cannot be found on Earth. This is able to heighten the tension and fear of failure. There is also a sense of mystery added to the threat which creates suspense. Some of my favorite movies involving this theme are Terminator, Predator, Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Stranger Things. Not all of these great movies contain a seemingly unstoppable adversary, but instead a conflict of another kind. for instance, in Blade Runner the conflict is an internal question that Deckard struggles with throughout the entire film. In-Progress Critique

One of the strengths of this animation is the nighttime setting. This is a less frequently seen time of day for an animation to take place. I wanted the nighttime setting because it would allow me more create freedom with lighting. Another strength mentioned by my peers is the depth of the composition. This is created by the layers upon layers of buildings that can be seen decreasing in size as they get further from the camera. The lighting in the animation allows for emphasis to be created as well as interest through gradients of light. For this current project I need to improve on creating a more dynamic set design. By this I mean a set design that seems to have a life of it's own. A set that isn't linear or repetitive, something that has contrast, emphasis, unity, rhythm, and narrative context. Also, I need to focus on fleshing out the connections between actions to help the flow of the animation stay consistent. The most important thing that I need to change for future p...

Choosing Colors

The Grand Budapest Hotel exercise has shown me that color schemes can change quite frequently throughout a film. These color changes can represent changes in the themes or introduce new symbols in your animation. What I have learned from this particular film is that you don't have to hold yourself to any one particular color scheme. In fact, you can go as far as to change the color scheme on a shot by shot basis. The hotel sequence is an astounding example of this by using the different color combinations to show diversity. This helps the viewer to understand that the hotels are in quite different and exotic locations across the world. The use of color in costuming is also just as essential as it's use in the production design. Through this lesson on color and its potential implementations I have had a complete change of perspective on the use of color in film. Adobe color is an extraordinary tool for deciding what color scheme to use. The way that I will use this tool in order...
