In-Progress Critique

One of the strengths of this animation is the nighttime setting. This is a less frequently seen time of day for an animation to take place. I wanted the nighttime setting because it would allow me more create freedom with lighting. Another strength mentioned by my peers is the depth of the composition. This is created by the layers upon layers of buildings that can be seen decreasing in size as they get further from the camera. The lighting in the animation allows for emphasis to be created as well as interest through gradients of light.

For this current project I need to improve on creating a more dynamic set design. By this I mean a set design that seems to have a life of it's own. A set that isn't linear or repetitive, something that has contrast, emphasis, unity, rhythm, and narrative context. Also, I need to focus on fleshing out the connections between actions to help the flow of the animation stay consistent. The most important thing that I need to change for future projects is to remember that the narrative of the film/animation is meant to be the priority of every project.

How could you use light to bring emphasis to objects and to contrast with the dark city landscape? I could use hard backlighting to create a rim outlining the focus of the animation. For a moving subject I can either set up multiple lights along the path or have a light move with the character. How could you add more compositional elements to the scene? I could add more detail into each building. This would allow for leading lines, vertical lines, and horizontal lines which would all add more interest. I could also add other objects like heating and cooling units on the roofs or water storage.

Film Score Investigation

Why Music? Music is an essential part of film. It can be used to set the tone for a scene or to drive the action. When used correctly in conjunction with visuals, music can transform the emotional experience of a film. Some of the most memorable moments of a film are because of the score. Film scores can be used to build tension, fear, or any emotion. For this investigation I will be learning about how to create a film score. The Psychological Effect of Music In Film 1 during our study of film history we discussed what is known as the Kuleshov effect. The Kuleshov effect is an analysis of how the audiences interpretation of an image changes in relation to the next image. So if you have a man with a neutral face and you cut to a hamburger and back to the man he looks hungry. Similarly, music creates a tone for the visuals presented to the audience. This tone is what allows the audience to understand the emotions they are intended to be feeling while viewing the film. A grea...

Year End Summary

Favorite Part of Class My favorite part of class was being able to work independently. Having the freedom to work at my own pace was a breath of fresh air. Also what I enjoyed a lot was being able to help with other groups shoots. Before we would only shoot in our own groups, but with the freedom to shoot outside of class it became a lot easier. Seeing how other people performed their tasks and managed their crew was also an interesting and insightful experience. What I Learned the Most I've learned the most about how to deal with people on a set. Being outside of school completely changes the dynamic and it really shows you who is a hard worker and who isn't. Being able to pick and choose who I worked with is great, but it is important to know how to work with people you wouldn't want to work with. It is a key role of the director to keep everyone motivated on the shoot. This is essential because if no one is trying than you aren't going to have a good movie. It t...
